Week 3 BLOG

*Call, write, or talk to at least three friends, family members, colleagues. Include at least one person who you believe is in some ways culturally different from you.


·         Family Number One:

Their definition of Culture: Ethnicity, religion or a person beliefs/values.

Their definition of Diversity:  Different groups that you are surrounded by

 ·         Friend Number Two:

Their definition of Culture:  What a person ethnicity is. It is the way you were brought up.

Their definition of Diversity:  A range of different things around you.

 ·         Friend Number Three:

Their definition of Culture:  Is your family and everything about you.

Their definition of Diversity:  Is the different people around you. Such as race, religion, gender, age, education , economic status, and it could even me your weight, if your short, or tall. It is a variety of differences in the room.

 

Which aspects of culture and diversity that I have studied in this course are included in the answers I received-and what are some examples?

The aspects of diversity and culture are included in all three of the answers that I have gotten. Each person stated what defines a person and their way of determining a person identity. They explained diversity as being broad and showed what their views of diversity were. It amazed me that all three people I spoke with came from different environments but had the about the same view on culture and diversity.

 

Which aspects have been omitted-and what are some examples of such omission?

From what I see there were not any examples of omission from the three people I spoke with.

 

In what ways has thinking about other people’s definitions of culture and diversity influenced my own thinking about these topics?

Understanding other people’s perspective helps me grasp a better understanding of what culture and diversity means to them. It allows me to have a deeper understanding and an open mind about these topics.

  1. I think it is hard to recognize what a person is omitting if they do not have all of the information on a topic like this. It also can be difficult to express definitions of culture and diversity because there is so much involved in one word. Having an open mind about culture may be the best way to gain more understanding overall.

  2. The people that I talked to were all different ages and from different backgrounds (ethnic groups/cultures) but all gave pretty much the same answers as well. In my blog I spoke about how the people I talk to mainly gave answers about physical characteristics when they were asked what culture and diversity was. They did not really name anything that we discussed when talking about soicla identities and how these identities really define your culture.

  3. As i have mentioned before. These are both two very strong word. Sometimes it takes time for people to share what they are really feeling. It is so important to find out the information about each other. There is so much to learn from each other and then to figure out how we can balance to keep cultures and diversity balnaced and alive.

    The individuals all seem to understand the broadness of diversity. Although at times, I think people know what it is, but are they truly accepting of diversity. I think the aim is to have an open mind.
