· How you would explain to others what each of these items means to you
I would explain to others that each of these items are valuable to me and mean a lot to me. My family Canvas will represent that we will always stick together no matter what. All the pictures would show what happens in my life. The third item is the bible. This will show others that I believe that God will always protect my family and I. I know that God will always protect me. These three items show others a little bit about who I am and what my social identities are.
· Your feelings if, upon arrival, you were told that you could only keep on personal item and have to give up the other two items you brought with you.
I would be very upset because the three items I choose are very dear to me and really would show others who I am. It would be hard to give any of the items up.
· Any insights you gained about yourself, your family culture, diversity, and/or cultural differences in general, as a result of this exercise.
I have not gained any new insight about my family or culture. It did help me really think what would be important if something like that would happen and how thankful I am to have my family around.
You have some very meaningful items that you would take with you. I also find it hard to choose between items but find that the exercise has made me more aware of what is truly important in life. I believe that as long as my family is with me, we will be able to represent of culture together.
ReplyDeleteI too found this exercise a help to seeing what is truly important to me. It also allowed me to see just how important my family really is to me and the value I place on them and our commonalities and differences.

Hi Karen. I see that we listed some of the same items. I didn't think of bringing a camera, although there was one on my cell phone. I also chose to bring my Bible to strengthen my relationship with God and it would be the only item that I would think of keeping, having to get rid of the other two. I also like the idea of a family canvas. It has inspired me to make a quilt that captures family memories - Something that can be passed down from generation to generation. Thanks for sharing.
