WEEK 8

WOW! Sunday will be a big relief and a very happy moment for me. It seems like yesterday I started this program. I have learned many things in this course and especially from my classmates. I am not going to miss all the papers and assignments but I will miss hearing my classmate’s views and life experiences. I was excited each week to read what others wrote! So I want to say thank you! Thank each person for sharing their opinions and holding nothing back J

Secondly,

I want to thank Dr. Teri. Her weekly news letters helped take a little stress off my back because I knew what to expect for the week. You are an awesome teacher and I only hope to help others as you have helped and inspired me!! So once again thank you!

I wanted to share a few pictures of my inspiration… my family J Also I wanted to share a picture of the students that I educate on my school J

Post at least 3 deeply felt learning’s from this program:

·         This field has created ethics guidelines which guide professionals in their interactions with children, families, colleagues, policy makers, and the public in general (Laureate Education, 2011). With that said, over the course that have given me the tools to interact with others in a professional manner and has given me the tools to be able to make a difference

·         This program has taught me that there is hope in the future of our children. I have seen others in my class that shares the same passion for our children!

·         WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

Long-Term Goal:

·         I want to make sure that every child in Muscogee County has basic knowledge of the importance of following a healthy lifestyle. I want to be able to go into each classroom and educate our children and provide take home tools for them.

Internationally ECE Community

This week I was able to research many different international organizations. I picked the three that stood out to me the most and that I felt made a difference in children’s lives. I found that all three organizations were there for children and their families during hard times in their life. That is when we need someone to pick us up the most.

1.       Rainbows:

Rainbows is an international, not-for-profit organization that fosters emotional healing among children grieving a loss from a life-altering crisis. Rainbows has been implemented in 49 of the United States (the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam) and in Australia, Austria, Canada, England, Hong Kong, Ireland, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Saipan, Scotland, Singapore, Switzerland and Wales.

There are no current job openings at this organization but if there were a job opening you could be on the board. The Governing Board of Rainbows determines policy, monitors the implementation and effectiveness of policy and strategic direction, and provides legislative advice and consent to the management of Rainbows. In this capacity, the membership of the Governing Board maintains legal responsibility for Rainbows as defined by law.

I choose this organization because we often look over children in need after a life changing crisis. This gives children a person to go to if they fill they do not have anyone else to turn to.

Mission: Providing hope and resources for those without life’s essentials

Vision: No child or family goes to bed hungry

What We Do:

Feed The Children addresses four basic needs: food and nutrition, water and sanitation, education and health, and livelihood community development. In addition to helping families and communities around the world achieve lasting self-sufficiency, Feed The Children also responds quickly in times of disaster to provide emergency supplies for those in need.

The reason why I choose this organization is because I am an advocate for our families provided proper nutrition on a daily basis. It is important that our children do not go hungry.  It breaks my heart if I hear that a child did not eat because their parents did not have enough money.

Blog WEEK 4 Jobs/Roles in the ECE community: National/Federal Level

·         WIC

WIC is the first national organization that appealed to me. The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) provides Federal grants to States for supplemental foods, health care referrals, and nutrition education for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, and to infants and children up to age five who are found to be at nutritional risk. You can find more information about it at http://www.fns.usda.gov/wic . The job opportunity that I could be associated with WIC is the nutritionist. I would be able to educate the parents as well as educate the children about healthy lifestyles. They also have cooking classes that are incorporated in the nutrition education so that parents can see how to cook items on the WIC list.  The skills that you would need to fulfill this career are nutrition knowledge, communication skills, and compassion.

·         The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Center to Prevent Childhood Obesity

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Center to Prevent Childhood Obesity is a national organization dedicated to reversing the childhood obesity epidemic by changing public policies and creating healthier environments in schools and communities. The center helps to shape and

coordinate the efforts of policy-makers, advocates and community organizations by identifying and promoting the most promising obesity-prevention strategies and supporting the nationwide movement to improve food and physical activity environments. Their goal is to reverse the childhood obesity epidemic by 2015 by improving access to affordable healthy foods and increasing opportunities for physical activity in schools and communities across the nation. You read more about this organization at http://www.rwjf.org/en/about-rwjf/program-areas/childhood-obesity.html?cid=xdr_rco_001 . The organization offers opportunities in communications, program development, and research and evaluations. Available positions offer varying levels of responsibility for the identification, development, and support of programs and projects associated with our mission to improve the health and health care of all Americans. We also offer professional opportunities in administration, finance and technology.

·         USDA

USDA food and nutrition is the third organization that I have found useful .  The USFA is under the U.S. federal executive department responsible for developing and executing federal government policy on farming, agriculture, forestry, and food. It aims to meet the needs of farmers and ranchers, promote agricultural trade and production, work to assure food safety, protect natural resources, foster rural communities and end hunger in the United States and abroad. They have implemented many new guidelines for the school lunch and breakfast program that help prevent obesity.  It would be important to have communication skills as well as knowledge of federal regulations and nutrition knowledge to work with USDA. You can find more information at http://www.usda.gov/wps/portal/usda/usdahome

Exploring Roles in the ECE Community

Choose at least 3 local or state or communities of practice that appealed to you, and explain why you chose them:
1. Strong 4 Life:
It originated through Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta launched Strong4Life, a wellness movement designed to ignite societal change and reverse the epidemic of childhood obesity and its associated diseases in Georgia. Based on our clinical behavior change model for treating overweight and obese children, Strong4Life aims to help families achieve sustainable lifestyle change by breaking down the complex issue of childhood obesity into simple steps.

I chose this organization because I am passionate about reversing the childhood obesity epidemic. This organization allows people from all over Georgia to come together and advocate for our children.

You can read more about this organization at
http://www.strong4life.com/pages/about/ArticleDetails.aspx?articleid=DefiningWhatItMeans&sectionid=overview
2. Live Healthy Columbus
Live Healthy Columbus is a coalition of more than 30 organizations and individuals working together to help the people of Columbus, Georgia to live healthier lives.

Mission : Empower citizens and organizations to improve their quality of life through healthy living activities.

Vision: A better community through healthy living

https://sites.google.com/site/livehealthycolumbusga/home/who-we-are

I chose this organization because I am currently part of Live Healthy Columbus. We meet once a month to discuss activities that we can do throughout the year and how we can educate the public. It is a wonderful organization and I have seen us make a difference in our children’s lives.
3. WIC The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) provides Federal grants to States for supplemental foods, health care referrals, and nutrition education for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, and to infants and children up to age five who are found to be at nutritional risk.
I chose WIC because I feel that this program educated mothers as well as children on healthy choices and it also helps support the proper growth of our young children.

The job that interest me is School Nutrition Director. In order to become a director you need to have a masters in education. At the current moment there are no jobs opened, but I am constantly looking for one. The skills that I would need to have is experience in school nutrition, as well as, working with children and adults on a daily basis.

Early Childhood Education: Early Childhood Education: Week 6

·         Think about which aspects of the groups made for the hardest good-bye. Are high-performing groups hardest to leave? Groups with the clearest established norms? Which of these groups that you participated in was hardest to leave? Why?

One of the hardest groups that I have to leave was a group that established a norm. We began to focus on developing and working together rather than an individual. We were out to educate the children on healthy lifestyles as well as keeping ourselves healthy. We all agreed on team rules we trusted each other. It was hard to leave because I was so passionate about what our group did and I developed a relationship with the other people on the team.

·         What sorts of closing rituals have you experienced or wish you had experienced?

Our group had a lunch and we got together to celebrate our wonderful progress and what we have been doing for the year.

·         How do you imagine that you will adjourn from the group of colleagues you have formed while working on you master’s degree in this program?

At the end of each class we show our appreciation on our blogs. We write on our colleagues blogs thanking them and telling them what we appreciated most during that course.

·         Why is adjourning an essential stage of teamwork?

You can see what you have excelled in and also what you need to work on for the following year. It is a time to highlight the positive in what you are doing. It is always nice to feel praised for your hard work.

Early Childhood Education: Week 5

Blog 5

  • Think about any disagreements, or conflicts, you have recently experienced or are currently experiencing at work with a supervisor or colleague, or someone in your personal life. Share at lest two strategies you have learned about that might be effective.

I am currently experiencing conflict with one of my managers. I am calling a meeting with her on Monday when we get back from spring break. This week has helped me have a better understanding of how I can handle conflict. The first strategy that I have learned that could help me with this conflict is really listening what the other person has to say and what they think. The second strategy that I have learned this week is do not imply judgment. Keeping an open mind during a conflict with help you resolve or come to a compromise during the disagreement.

If anyone else has some advice to give me for my meeting with this employee on Monday please advise your thoughts or inputs.

Week 4

Blog Week 4

·         Think about the similarities and differences between how you evaluated yourself as a communicator and how others evaluated you. What is the one thing that surprised you the most? Why?

The one thing that surprised me the most was that my husband evaluated me similar to what I evaluated myself. I speak out a lot more when I am around him so I thought that my communication anxiety would differ from his.  Another surprise was how different my husband sees me as a communicator than my coworker. My coworker sees me more comfortable in a larger group than myself and my husband. I need to work on my public speaking and becoming more comfortable with it because my job requires me to speak in public often and in large groups. I am working on gaining confidence to help calm my nerves down when speaking in large groups!

·         What other insights about communication did you gain this week?

I learned that I am a people pleaser and that could hurt me in my professional career. I am too trusting and need to keep my guard up a little because if not then it could bite me in the butt J Knowing this will help me in my professional life because I will be more aware of letting people run over me. I have also learned that I do not need to judge a book by its cover! I need to get to know someone before I make assumptions. I will be more aware in the future of doing that. Understanding both of these will help me in my professional and personal life.

Friday, March 22, 2013

Week 3

·         Do you find yourself communicating differently with people from different groups and cultures?

·         If yes, in what ways do you communicate differently?

·         Based on what you have learned this week, share at least three strategies you could use to help you communicate more effectively with the people or groups you have identified

I do find myself communicating with differently with different groups of people. For example, when I go into the classroom and interact with the children I am soft spoke and motherly sounding. When I interact with my colleagues I am more professional, and when I speak to my employees I am compassionate yet demand respect.

1.       Using the Platinum Rule

2.       Don’ t just withhold judgment from people who are obviously from a different culture than your own.

3.       3. Understanding culture differences

Week 2

For this assignment, again consider you have been learning about communication skills and styles. Then record an episode of a television show you do no normally watch. Watch the show with the sound turned off.

·         What do you think the characters’ relationships are based on the ways in which they are communicating?

The show that I choose to watch is big bang theory. I have heard others talk about the show but I have never watched it. I turned off the sound. There are 4 guys and 3 girls that were mainly on the show when I was watching it. It seemed as all of the characters were just friends. It looked like 4 of the guys lived in an apartment next door to one of the girls. They all hung out in the guy’s apartment.

·         What are they feeling and expressing based on the nonverbal behavior you are observing?

The girl that lived across the hall often rolled her eyes at one of the guys on the show. She seemed to be annoyed by him. All of the characters laughed together and one of the guys had a confused look on his face at times.

Now, watch the show with the sound turned on.

·         What assumptions did you make about the characters and plot based on the ways in which you interpreted the communication being observed?

Once the sound was on there were only 2 guys that lived in the apartment beside the girl. The girl was dating one of the guys that she lived by. The other two guys just hung out at the apartment frequently and the other two girls dated the other guys.

·         Would your assumptions have been more correct if you had been watching a how you know well?

If the sound was on I would have understood that the girl was rolling her eyes at the guy she was dating because he was asking her if she was cheating on him. I assumed she was annoyed I just did not know why. The guy that I thought was confused did not speak English very well.

My “aha” moment was thinking about we often make assumptions about someone before we really talk to them and get to know them. We need to carry this lesson in life and really communicate with the families that we come into contact with.

WEEK 1

For your blog this week, think of someone (e.g., family member, celebrity, politician, friend, or professor) who demonstrates competent communication within a particular context. What behaviors does this person exhibit that make him or her effective? Would you want to model some of your own communication behaviors after this person? Why or why not?

The person that demonstrates competent communication is my father. He is a retired principal now but when I would watch him work I could see that his communication was effective with the students as well as his teachers. My father was the principal at my school so growing up I had it tough. One thing my father had with everyone he came into contact with is respect from his employees and his students.  They knew what he expected and they also knew that he cared. He was always there to listen.  I have always looked up to my father (I am a big daddy’s girl J). I try to model the person that he is and the morals that my dad shows. I try to communicate with my co-workers and the families that I come into contact with much like him. I want them to know where I stand but also to feel that they can come to my about anything.

WEEK 8 BLOG

·         One hope that you have when you think about working with children and families who come from diverse backgrounds

I hope that each and every family does not have experience some of the “isms” that we have discussed these past 8 weeks. I hope that our society does not set a certain norm and think that is the way we should live. I hope that one day our world can see as God does, that is that we are all equal.

·         One goal you would like to set for the early childhood field related to issues of diversity, equity, and social justice

The goal that I would like to set is that we educate our young children on these issues so that we can work toward a society that works as a team and in different groups. I want our young children to not be taught “isms” and to love everyone for who they are.

·         A brief note of thanks to your colleagues

I would like to thank each one of you for sharing your thoughts and experiences. It has helped me grow personally and professionally. I look forward to continue learning with each of you.

WEEK 7 BLOG

·         The name of “your” family’s country of origin.

Australia

·         At least five ways in which you will prepare yourself to be culturally responsive towards this family.

I will have each month a different country theme day. I will make sure that I educate the other children on Australia so that the child will feel at home.

I will bake some favorite dishes from Australia Anzac biscuits (cookies); Chiko Rolls (a sort of large spring roll); dim sims (Chinese-style meat dumpling).

Australians feel that it is important to make direct eye contact with them while talking so I will ensure when communicating with the families I will have direct eye contact with them.  They also do not like to feel that you are in their space. I will ensure that I am not invading their space.

I will communicate with the family to see what values and beliefs that they have and want me to carry on in the classroom for their child. Even in the US our children vary in what values are held in the house hold.

I will make sure that any holiday’s that we celebrate their family celebrates as well. If the child has a different celebration faith then we could talk about having a special time with the child for that certain celebration.

·         A brief statement describing in what ways you hope that these preparations will benefit both you and the family

I hope that these preparations will help make my family and the child feel that they are welcomed and comfortable in my classroom.  It will help the child start off feeling a little more comfortable about the transition to a new country. Being prepared will help reduce the uncertainty of having a child from another country in your classroom.

Week 6Blog

·         What memory do you have of an incident when you experienced bias, prejudice, and/or oppression, or witnessed someone else as the target of bias, prejudice, and/or oppression? Keep in mind that one can encounter such incidents in real contexts including online environments, as well as in fictional ones, such as movies, books, television shows and the like.

I can remember when I was in elementary school there was a boy that was not able to participate in our holiday functions. He would always walk out of the room. At the time I was young and did not know why he could not celebrate with us. I remember other children talking about him like there was something wrong with him. You could tell he felt uncomfortable when they would call his name out to leave. His face would turn red. Now as an adult I bet that it has affected him his whole life. He was not different from any of us, he just worshiped different.

·         In what ways did the specific bias, prejudice and/or oppression in the incident diminish equity?

The teachers calling him out in front of the class diminish equity.

·         What feelings did this incident bring up for you?

At the time I was young and did not realize the damage and problems that is could cause the young boy. Now that I think about it; it saddens me and I wished I could go back in time and educate the teachers on a better way of pulling the child out. Help him feel a part of the class.

·         What and or/ who would have to change in order to turn this incident into an opportunity for greater equity?

I would have changed how the teachers approached the situation and I would also change my reaction to the other children talking about the young boy. I would have stood up for the child and made him feel welcomed and a part of the class.

Early Childhood Education: Week 4 Blog

Blog WEEK 4

Describe at least one example of a microaggression which you detected this week or remember from another time. In what context did the mircoaggression happen? What did you think and feel when you observed the microaggression or when you found yourself as the target of a microaggression.

I can remember at one of my old jobs there were a few of my coworkers talking about a client that we had.  He was gay. They made a comment that why do “they” speaking of gay, talk like a girl. My coworkers did not realize that the man was standing there. I looked up at his face and you could tell it bothered him. I felt really bad for the man. I walked over and told him not to pay them any attention. He said quietly that it is okay I hear stuff like that all the time. I was very upset for this man. It does not matter if you are gay or straight you should treat everyone in the same respect.

In what ways did you observation experiences this week affect your perception of the effects of discrimination, prejudice, and/or sterotypes on people.

This week has really opened my eyes to all of the above. Especially after learning about microaggression, I have realized that I need to be more aware of other’s feelings.  It really made me ask myself if I have ever showed microaggression and not been aware of doing it. I see how bad it could hurt someone even if they do not show it. As a professional you want to make all children and their families feel welcomed and not feel judged.

Week 3 BLOG

*Call, write, or talk to at least three friends, family members, colleagues. Include at least one person who you believe is in some ways culturally different from you.

·         Family Number One:

Their definition of Culture: Ethnicity, religion or a person beliefs/values.

Their definition of Diversity:  Different groups that you are surrounded by

 ·         Friend Number Two:

Their definition of Culture:  What a person ethnicity is. It is the way you were brought up.

Their definition of Diversity:  A range of different things around you.

 ·         Friend Number Three:

Their definition of Culture:  Is your family and everything about you.

Their definition of Diversity:  Is the different people around you. Such as race, religion, gender, age, education , economic status, and it could even me your weight, if your short, or tall. It is a variety of differences in the room.

Which aspects of culture and diversity that I have studied in this course are included in the answers I received-and what are some examples?

The aspects of diversity and culture are included in all three of the answers that I have gotten. Each person stated what defines a person and their way of determining a person identity. They explained diversity as being broad and showed what their views of diversity were. It amazed me that all three people I spoke with came from different environments but had the about the same view on culture and diversity.

Which aspects have been omitted-and what are some examples of such omission?

From what I see there were not any examples of omission from the three people I spoke with.

In what ways has thinking about other people’s definitions of culture and diversity influenced my own thinking about these topics?

Understanding other people’s perspective helps me grasp a better understanding of what culture and diversity means to them. It allows me to have a deeper understanding and an open mind about these topics.

WEEK 2 BLOG: MY FAMILY CULTURE

Blog Assignment My Family Culture

 ·         Description of the three items you would choose

1.       My large family Canvas

2.       My camera

3.       Bible

·         How you would explain to others what each of these items means to you

I would explain to others that each of these items are valuable to me and mean a lot to me.  My family Canvas will represent that we will always stick together no matter what. All the pictures would show what happens in my life. The third item is the bible. This will show others that I believe that God will always protect my family and I. I know that God will always protect me. These three items show others a little bit about who I am and what my social identities are.

·         Your feelings if, upon arrival, you were told that you could only keep on personal item and have to give up the other two items you brought with you.

I would be very upset because the three items I choose are very dear to me and really would show others who I am. It would be hard to give any of the items up.

·         Any insights you gained about yourself, your family culture, diversity, and/or cultural differences in general, as a result of this exercise.

I have not gained any new insight about my family or culture. It did help me really think what would be important if something like that would happen and how thankful I am to have my family around.
