Sharing Web Resources: Week 4

Blog: Sharing Web Resources 6162

 ·         The section that seemed particular relevant to my current professional development would be how the HeadStart Association website provides links for ways one could help others from hunger. Examples of the Summer Feeding Program, lunch and breakfast program, snack program and many other programs that could give me better ideas of how I can provided for these children. Children must be healthy to learn and learn to be healthy!

·         Headstart is at risk of losing funding which could affect the program. As we have talked about in our class it is important for children to have a quality education during the early years of life. The Headstart program is a wonderful program for low income families to help these children become successful later in life

·         Politicians support early childhood and with this program could help many children stay on a successful path. Politicians say they want to improve early childhood programs. Also economist think that it does the economy good if you invest in early childhood education.

·         I did not realize the amount of resources and programs that are available through one program alone. We need to take advantage of the resources we have and grant money that is offered and really use it. Some people do want to spend the time to be able to receive these grants. We just got a grant through our school system for Fresh Fruit and Vegetables at snack time for our students. It takes time but there are so many resources out there to help our children with education!

  1. Ms. Davis speaking about providing healthy meals is very important. Ensuring that children are nourished is one way that healthy development begins. The facility I manage comes up with a snack menu for the youth and teens because they are there after school. They constantly remind us that we should stay under budget but it's difficult to do because of our location and food that's available. Having an empty tummy is one distraction children shouldn't have while learning and I agree that this is another important aspect of our professional development.

  2. Summer meal programs have been around for so many years. I remember as a child many of my friends would attend the summer breakfast and lunch programs. This is such a big help to low income families.

  4. I like what you have commented on the Headstart program. I have just been hired on as a lead teacher for the 3 and 4 year olds in Murray, Utah. It is a great program and will give those who are at risk, live in poverty, or children just need a head start for school. It has been a stressful three weeks learning all the mechanics of the job. Being with the children and know that you are making a difference is beyond monitory reimbursement.

  5. Hi Karen,
This is a great aspect of the Head Start Program that I am really interested to learn more about. I will be checking out the website. I have worked for Head Start and they do their best to insure the children have a good and nutritious meal. Several of my friends are cooks and they really enjoy what they do and they love to make sure that they eat healthy.

  6. I find it heartbreaking that an organization that has so much history for having successful programs. Your blog inspires me to advocate for these programs. I also think it is crucial for these programs to continue to support meals and snacks. Unfortunately, many families lack knowledge about nutritious meals or lack enough food in their house so children often receive theri main meal for the day when they are attended programs such as Head Start.
