WEEK 7 CODE OF ETHICS

NAEYC. Code of ethical conduct and statement of commitment.  http://www.naeyc.org/files/naeyc/file/positions/PSETH05.pdf

Three ideas that were meaningful to me:

1. We shall strive for the highest level of personal and professional competence by seeking and using new evidence based information to improve our practices while also responding openly to the suggestions of others.
·         In my professional life following this code of ethics will help me keep on open mind and help push me to be the best that I can be. In the end will help benefit the children the most.
2. We shall use individually appropriate assessment strategies including multiple sources of information such as observations, interviews with significant caregivers, formal and informal assessments to determine children’s learning styles, strengths, and challenges.
·         I have learned especially in this course that every child learns in a different way. It is so important to pay attention to how a child learns and then act on that way of learning. It will be more effective and will benefit the child the most.
3. We shall use every resource, including referral when appropriate, to ensure high quality services are accessible and are provided to children and families.
·         I have dealt with a few issues within the school system, that teachers are not referring these high risk children (obese) to me.  They try and take the issue on themselves. They are not certified or trained to help this situation, therefore the child may not get the best help and information that he/she can.
Principals from the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct
P-1.1- Above all, we shall not harm children. We shall not participate in practices that are emotionally damaging, physically harmful, disrespectful, degrading, dangerous, exploitative, or intimidating to children.
·         I choose this code of ethics because you see some educators use intimidation as a method of teaching. I feel it is important to love the child and show how much you care about them.
Ideals from the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct
I-2.1- To welcome all family members and encourage them to participate in the program.
·         It is important to include family in any learning style. If family members  are involved than the outcome will be more successful.
I-3C.1- To promote safety and healthy working conditions and policies that foster mutual respect, cooperation, collaboration, competence, well-being, confidentiality, and self-esteem in staff members.
·         This code is beneficial for me when I become School Nutrition Director. As a leader you need to serve your staff as well and praise the staff, so that they can better serve the students.

  1. I agree that it is important as a professional to keep our minds open to continuous research and increased knowledge. I liked how you stated that it would push you to do your best and that it would be what is best for the children because ultimately that is what we are here for! I could connect with you about individually learning about each student and how they learn best not only as an educator but as a mother of 3 very different learners! I would appreciate your continued committment to the best interest of the children and learn what benefits them the most as an individual and in their family unit!

  2. I agree Karen that involving families in your learning style makes for a better outcome. As a parent, I know that when families are involved in the learning process everyone is on the same page which leads to an outcome of success. Children learn in different ways so it is important to utilize and embrace childrens unique abilites. This results in teaching children to be leaders instead of followers.

  3. You are right when you mentioned that some teachers use "intimidation as a method of teaching." I totally disagree with that. I understand that sometimes children can be very challenging but no matter what they are still a child. I start each day fresh and leave whatever happens the day before in the past. Also, sometimes we got to stop taking things personal and try to get to the core of the problem. Maybe a child is having issues at home that is causing problems in the classroom or have an effect on the child's quality of work.

  4. Karen, I just wanted to thank you for the difference you have made in the class for me. It was fun to get to know a little more of who you are in the blog, and I was amazed at how much I connected with what you had to say and your reasoning. I too am a mom and know that is why I am so passionate about early childhood. Thank you for the insight, the resources, and the personalization you brought to our first class, I have learned alot and will continue to learn with the resources I have taken away from everyone as well as the readings!

  5. Karen-
I really liked the principle 1.1 that talks about not harming children. I love the fact that it goes into detail and mentions more than just physical harm. It is vital for young children to have at least one place in their lives where they can come and be accepted, loved and guided without the fear of emotional abuse or bullying. Thanks for pointing this one out!
